The year is wrapping up so here’s my list of my favorite games from 2011.
10. LA Noire
LA Noire had a lot of hype building behind it, luckily Rockstar delivered a very original game. While the overall story arch didn’t go deep enough for my tastes, LA Noire had some great side plots. The investigation gameplay was surprising fun, digging through a person’s home for evidence and then interrogating them was always a delight.
9. Alice Madness Returns
American McGee’s Alice was one of my favorite games growing up. When I heard the long awaiting sequel was coming out I was very excited. While Alice Madness Returns had its technical issues, the game had incredible art design and addicting gameplay. Although if you’re not already a fan, you may not fully enjoy this one.
8. Dead Space 2
The original Dead Space is one of my favorite games of this generation. Dead Space 2 stays true to the formula with improvements accross the board. Zero gravity sections were no longer confusing and the environments became more massive. Although I prefer Issac as a silent character, Dead Space 2 improves upon the original in almost every way.
7. Shadows of the Damned
Shadows of the Damned was one of the most underrated games of year in my opinion. With the gameplay from Resident Evil 4 and the over the top style with a hellish twist from No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned was a delight to play and a blast to complete.
6. Mario 3D Land
Mario 3D Land is by far the best 3DS game to come out this year. Coming from the team who made the Galaxy series on the Wii, Mario 3D Land was a sure hit. With intelligent level design and addicting gameplay for on the go play, Mario 3D Land is a fun adventure.
5. Infamous 2
Infamous was a fantastic super hero game for Playstation owners and the sequel improves upon the already winning formula. With excellent, fluid animation and an awesome city to explore, and a surprising and emotional ending, Infamous 2 is a game I can play for hours.
4. Uncharted 3
We all knew Uncharted 3 was going to be great, it’s just hard to follow the success of Uncharted 2 . With another great story line and characters and an expanded multiplayer, Uncharted 3 is another great addition to the series.
3. Batman Arkham City
Batman Arkham City is a fantastic game. Gotham City is beautifully recreated and exploring it is a pure treat. With too many super villains to count and plenty of riddles to solve, Batman Arkham City was an experience.
2. Portal 2
I love Portal 2. The writing is incredible, the visuals have wonderful style and the story just unfolds with ease in front of you. The gameplay challenges you with its puzzles and the co-op is a blast with friends. Portal 2 is a blast to play and a joy to complete.
My number one pick for game of year is Catherine. With stunning originality and emotional depth unseen in video games, Catherine manages to to challenge you with its puzzle gameplay and its incredibly engaging story line. Catherine deals with subjects that few movies can pull off. Catherine is my number one game of 2011.
